The Art of the Day is: Reminiscing

Well, sure, it's the end of December, and one can't help looking over the year and seeing the growth spurts and the setbacks, the achievements and the missed opportunities.
My reminiscing goes back directly to place, as I'm visiting a city I haven't been to in a couple of years. I want to say that finding an old road newly paved gives me hope that things have been going more smoothly here, and I could come away with a better impression than I had when I left. The fact that I am looking for the good stuff does not escape me. If I'm not down right optimistic (and I don't think I'm optimistic by nature), at least I'm not looking for trouble.
Maybe it's all a matter of perspective. Maybe just now I've got a good view.

The Art of the Day is: Painting

In honor of Rachel, who seems to have found her medium.
Finding your medium is an art in itself.
I've been getting back to old/new mediums.
Fabric is still facinating to me.
Fibre, Texture, Color and Form.

The Art of the Day is: Moving

As in:
  • Dance, exercise, tapping your toes, whatever

  • packing up and relocating (no, I'm not planning to move in the physical world, other than the aforesaid body shaking)

  • getting to a different place, in my thinking about things

  • moving on, as in relationships

After being in a stuck place, or in an unfamiliar place, being able to move and having a sense of direction is a pleasure.

The Art of the Day is: Making Light

As in:
  • Joking about something

  • Celebrations around the Winter Solstice

  • Diets

  • De-aquisitioning things (aka: getting rid of stuff)

  • Creating armatures

I invite you to add to the list

The Art of the Day is: Karma

As in what goes around comes around.

The Art of the Day is: Losing track of time

Sometimes, losing track of time is due to being so involved in a project, that you don't pay attention to the time. This is a zen-like state and much to be desired.
Sometimes losing track of time is just a matter of distraction, and that would not count as an art, unless the distraction was some sort of musing towards a new project. Proving that everything can be viewed as an art.

The Art of the Day (and maybe the week) is: Hide and Seek

Well, that's what you get for going on a whirlwind cleaning streak: stuff moved all around and stuff that you for some reason knew exactly where it was (even if it was buried in another pile of stuff) now displaced and you are clueless. I know we are a subset of people who live like this. Most people prefer to have a place for everything and everything in it's place, but some of us are differently organized, and like to hunt for stuff, and usually find things in the last place they look.

The Art of the Day is: Making Course Corrections

Sometimes, when you are sitting there, minding your own business, engaged in some trivial pursuit, the phone rings, and you are brought into another reality. Sometimes it takes more than one phone call. Some course corrections are more elegantly maneuvered than others. We do our best.
Our hearts go out to Laura and her mother, and her family. They too are doing their best.

The Art of the Day is: Variations on a theme

I am still working on making space, with only moderate success, but a stronger sense of approaching deadline. I think I am going to have to put on louder, dancier music to increase my pace. I may also have to readjust the lighting to brighten things up. Chasing away the old ennui.

The Art of the Day is: Making space

In literature as in life (do you recognize this all time lead in line from high school essays?) there comes a time when we need to straighten things up, get rid of stuff, and make room for others.
This is not my forte. I'm a nester, by inclination, and like to surround myself with things. On some level it is visually stimulating, but there is a point where it becomes overwhelming. Well that threshold has been reached (breached?), and although today I have a friend coming over to be honest eyes for me, and keep me on track, my project for the week is to clear up, clean out, and generally reorganize. Wish me well, and I'll keep you informed.

The Art of the Day is: Cat impersonations

My friend Allison was convinced her cat had language: mnow, purrdy, nyot nyow, etc.
My old black cat used to find the piece of white velvet in the sewing room to be the best place to rest.
My current cat finds where the ray of sunshine coming through the window shade hits the floor as the choice place to curl up.
Speaking only when they have something to say, imperiousness, and opportunistic, these are cat traits to emulate, as I sit at my desk and stretch my neck into the morning sun.

The Art of the Day is: Weather Forecasting

I had my day all planned out as a snow day. Stay inside, do things that can only be done indoors, and the storm blew off to the East, and I have no excuse to stay home, and my plans are shot and I need to reorganize. Very White Rabbit. No time for change.

The Art of the Day is: Orchestral Music

Here is yet another plug for live music. I went to hear the Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra's Holiday Pop's Concert, and while I am not a big fan of Christmas Carols and schmaltzy arrangements, listening to live music effects me viscerally. My breathing changes with the music, and ensemble playing puts everyone in the room in the same breathing pattern. Powerful stuff.
I also spent time at the Pawtucket Open Studio's Holiday Craft Show, and was seriously inspired, and delighted to find a first rate cut price fabric store (Lorraine Fabric) across the street. This resulted in my playing with fabric like I haven't done in a long time. I am looking forward to getting a new cell phone with a camera, so next time I'm out to dinner and sculpt a dead bunny out of two napkins (they had a rabbit special on the menu, so it seemed appropriate) I'll be able to post a picture.
