The Art of the Day is: Surprising yourself

So, when it comes to meeting with people in authority, why do I always assume the worst? Why am I surprised when I get a God Damn, Joanie! (meaning I've pulled something off) as opposed to a Good Joan (which means I've screwed up in a new and interesting way). I don't think this is totally wrong thinking, it's good to check to see if your slip is showing before your entrance, but there ought to be some middle ground between checking your slip and thinking you've forgotten to put on your pants (to torture the dressing analogy).
I was talking to someone recently about knee jerk reactions, and the impulse to be a rescuer. It's just that I'm really enjoying riding my new white horse.

A thought on 7/7/07

"If seven maids with seven mops
Swept it for half a year.
Do you suppose," the Walrus said,
"That they could get it clear?"
"I doubt it," said the Carpenter,
And shed a bitter tear.
